My Last Day

Today...is my last day at AFN. Truth be told, I'm sad. Roxette's "Joyride" is playing on my radio from AFN Naples's AFN "The Eagle"

I think the lyric..."enjoy the joyride" really describes my last three years here at AFN South's Network Production Center. Today doesn't just mark the end of my tour, but the end of my time with an organization that I believe best fits me. Some would tell you my blood runs AFN. Tell me what other job in the world allows you the opportunity get paid while having fun? (Please keep your comments clean)

On any given day, I get to: spend four hours playing music on the "Only Station Serving America's Best!" anchor a newscast, produce a radio/TV commercial that highlights what is important to the bravest men and women in the world, travel the globe to tell the military's story to the world, and be a part of a group of talented and motivated broadcasters....all with a kick-ass Luchador mask on! Just saying!

I remember coming over here and telling my wife, "the good thing is there won't be much travel with this job!" The first time I met my new boss was at a Thanksgiving dinner and he told me, "I hope you like to travel!" There was a period of time where I was averaging 10-days a month on the road. Many of my friends and family members where jealous of me because I was going to Africa A LOT! The problem is...where I was going...was not the "good" Africa. Thankfully, other than losing 10-pounds every time I went, nothing else bad happened. Not the case for my good friend James Allen. In his attempt to cover all of the fantastic work US Army Africa was doing on the continent...he got malaria.

Two of the coolest things I did while here were traveling to Africa, and covering the events surrounding the announcement of SSG Sal Giunta being awarded the Medal of Honor. (Click for Video)

I leave behind the best boss I've had in 20-years, a team of dedicated professionals, and a shit-ton of stories and memories. Mark my words...this IS NOT A GOOD-BYE! It is an UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN!

Now I'm heading to the Defense Information School to be an instructor. This will be yet another journey for me. I look forward to the next set of stories and memories...

Talking To Girls About Duran Duran - Intro & Chapter 1

In "Talking To Girls About Duran Duran," author Rob Sheffield takes you on trip back in time to what I think is the greatest decade of music...THE 80's! Sheffield uses references to the songs he was listening to on the radio to help explain how life was for a boy growing up during this "tubular" time. NO Hot Tube Time Machine needed...only a playlist from your past.

Each chapter of this book has a song title which relates to a particular point in time. Chapter 2 "David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes" describes Sheffield's relationship struggles with David Bowie. Although he admits, Mr. Bowie had no idea about their friendship, lack of friendship, friendship, lack of trust...well you get the drift.

The reason for this blog is about what Rob Sheffield talks about in Chapter 1 "The Go Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed." Rob describes be raised by all sisters and dreaming of being in the Go Go's as the only male member. Kind of weird...because I grew up with all girls (sister and cousins,) and we all pretended to be the Go Go's. I of course wished I could be a "real" member.

The chapter continues by suggesting your identity is based on what station you listen to:

"When you're a kid, every step in identity is marked by a step in music. You were totally defined by which station you listened to, graduating from the kiddie station to the teenybop station to the grown-up stations."

How true...how very true! My first memory of the radio was with Rick Dees in the Morning, on KISS FM! Sadly, Rick doesn't do morning radio anymore. I also remember spending a lot of time listening to "The Greatest Songs on Earth," K-EARTH 101. However, my defining moment of "Identity" came when I went past 101 FM, then past 102.7 FM and landed on 106.7 FM....KROQ! What is a Plimsouls? Is the lead singer of Missing Persons really only wearing plastic wrap? Why are the singers of Duran Duran and Depeche Mode wearing make-up...they're dudes? Many questions, many memories, definite "IDENTITY!"

PS...Just in case you didn't know...I'm a huge Duran Duran fan. I remember getting into a huge fight with my friend William Brown over them. You see, William had blonde hair and I have brown hair. William always got to be Simon Lebon, I was forced to be Andy Taylor. I wanted to be Simon soooo bad that I hit William in the stomach and told him it wasn't fair that I didn't have blonde hair. I then told my dad (we lived in Louisiana at the time) that I wanted to dye my hair blonde. Oh the look on his face was priceless. I'm sure he was thinking:
"What kind of (insert insensitive, derogatory, sexual orientation term) are you!"
I never did get my hair died that summer...but when I moved back to California, my new step brother Sean cut my hair the way I really wanted it. He called a "Californian Mo-Hawk." My mom called it a "What the Fu%&!"

20-Years And Counting, A Journey of Service...or...Working For Half Pay

This picture is a funny stab at how many perceive the Air Force. Of course, there are other pictures with the same caveman for the other services, but this one is appropriate...because I serve and have served in the Air Force for the past 20-years. My road has had several turns in it. Starting from day 1. Do the quick public math, and my first day was 2 Aug 90, the day Iraq invaded Kuwait. I have spent my entire career at war. With each passing year, my commitment and the Air Force's commitment to said wars have increased. So, how is it this loud-mouthed, Southern-Californian, free-thinking, guy not only served for 20-years, but has kind of thrived in this environment? I really don't know exactly, but I do know many people have helped me along the way.

I didn't joined the Air Force, because I had done my research, and wanted nothing more than a sterling AF career. Rather, it was my only affordable option. I graduated with a 3.63 GPA and wasn't even in the top 20% of my class. Combine that with the fact my family didn't have enough money to pay for college, but made too much to qualify for grants/good loans...and it was off to the Air Force. For the record, there were only two reasons why I chose the AF; 1) My dad served in the AF, 2) It was BY FAR the easiest service to serve in. (But not for long!)

I joined the Air Force in hopes to see the world. Bright-eyed and eager to serve my country in any location...the Air Force sent me to Northern California...TWICE! Hell...the second time, my mom, step-dad, step-brother and his wife moved to the same place. According to my Travel-Buddy map, I've seen 19% of the world in the past 20-years...with exciting stops in hot spots like: Liberia, Iraq, Bosnia, Slovakia, and Cote d' Ivoire. Oh...and some real hard duty in places like: Croatia, UK, Germany, and France.

I had the pleasure to spend time in a one man-life raft, eat maggot and bunny soup. I was convinced I was lost on the North Korean boarder during a survival training exercise. I re-enlisted at 80,000 feet. I interviewed Toby Keith...twice! Hell, I was just in Esquire magazine. (Story not posted yet) I met the love of my life...had chicken on the Iranian boarder...flew a T-38...launched men to 100,000 feet at mach 3+ and they returned...read "One Fish, Two Fish" about 20 times to kids in three countries...got a letter of reprimand for being naked...taught yoga in a room full of M16's, M4's and 9Mil's...taught yoga to wounded warriors...and have made friends from every walk of life in every corner of the world. It has been a blast...but I didn't do it by myself. That is for sure.

Obviously, and justifiably, I can credit all of my success to my wife Shelly who has shaped me into a credible person...and while everyone I've met has made an impact on me...and I have made a ton of life-long friends along the way...this part of the blog is more about professional impact. When I think about the people who have made me the Airman I am today...six people come to mind:

MSgt Ed Cotney: Msgt Cotney taught me the value of shooting for the stars and being prepared. I sat and watched Ed make other supervisors and section leaders look like fools. Not because he was brazen or harsh, but because he was prepared and always asked for more than he needed, knowing he wouldn't get it all...plus when money was on the table, Ed had already spent it.

TSgt Kevin Wagner: TSgt Wagner taught me that it was OK to have fun at work...and boy did we. Due to federal statute of limitations I can't go into full detail all of the "FUN" we had, but suffice to say we sure as hell did. Kevin somehow got this surfer boy who had no business being anywhere near a "survival" situation to be a moderately competent survival instructor. PS...I still think I could build a two-foot high fire in five minutes. The only thing Kevin couldn't get me to do was jump out of a perfectly good plane.

The Wonder Team: SrA Mellissa Allan, SrA Dan Bellis, SrA Yoel Lienwand, SrA Sunny Tanecka, SrA JC Spiva, and A1C Adam Winston: These were the first broadcasters I had the opportunity to work with. I showed up as a brand new SSgt and these guys were and still to date the best and brightest I've ever worked with. They put in long hours every day...not because their boss made them, or because of poor management, low manning levels...but because they wanted to be the best at what they did. They were studs...even if there were one or two Christmas trees destroyed in the making of a top-secret video.

SSgt Chris Vadnais: Chris is the smartest, most talented human I've ever met...possibly in the universe. For a hot New York minute...I actually out-ranked him. Today, he is a SMSgt select...destined for Chief. Chris motivates me every day to be better at what ever I do. While we've never worked in the same office, or country at any one time...I've teamed up with Chris on several major projects that have hopefully made an impact on the broadcasting career field. Chris is an innovator when it comes to training techniques. He always is looking for better ways to do just about everything. By standing next to him, you will easily gain 10-20 IQ points. If you're lucky enough...he might even write you your very own Hip-Hop song about Malt Liquor.

Major Melinda Morgan: My Air Force Mom! Major Morgan with one sentence changed my life. I had recently been diagnosed with ADD and had somehow totally messed up my back when she told me the following: "Oh Chris...you should really try yoga!" Today, I've been medicine free for more than three years, and I'm a yoga instructor with plans on being a full-time instructor when I retire. You were right about Baron Baptiste! Namaste my friend.

MSgt Mark Haviland: To me, MSgt Haviland was the complete package! Equal parts leadership, knowledge, inspiration, and charisma. Mark once told me he wasn't in the business of hitting singles, rather home-runs. After that...I was hooked! We spent many hours plotting how social media would impact our career field, and how we should stay ahead of it, and incorporate it. You should check out some of my earliest blog posts. One of them actually did shape our career field. It is Mark that I hope I am most like.

Over the past 20-years, I've spent the majority of my time training and sharing knowledge with others. I've been fortunate to be in positions that allow me to lead, train and produce all at the same time. As I close in on the end of my career, after countless "Chris Eder Tip of the Day's," I will transition to the Defense Information School to be a full-time instructor of tomorrow's "home-run" hitters for the next couple of years. Many of you surely can recall dozen of my catch phrases that I've used over the years, but the following really captures my spirit. I hope it captures yours.

Simple five step plan for just about everyone and everything
1. Go, make something happen.
2. Do work you're proud of.
3. Treat people with respect.
4. Make big promises and keep them.
5. Ship it out the door.

A Brand New Mashup...Or...Look Out T-Pain

I've always liked to mash things up. Mostly potatoes, but I also remember I use to mash ketchup and mustard together to dip my fries into. I also enjoyed mashing as many ingredients as possible together to make new and better recipes. Most of them failed. But, that's not the type of mashing I'm talking about.

According to Wikipedia: a mashup is a Web application that combines data or functionality from two or more sources into a single integrated application. The term mashup implies easy, fast integration, frequently done by access to open APIs and data sources to produce results that were not the original reason for producing the raw source data. An example of a mashup is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct Web service that was not originally provided by either source.

Well...what happens when you mashup TV news and the ever popular - AUTO TUNE???
Wonder no more!

I'm not really sure if I like the news better with or without the auto tune...but I think I might like the application of auto tune better on the news rather than on music. For the record...I DO NOT LIKE AUTO TUNE MUSIC...but Auto Tune The News...I do like.

What I'm really impressed by is the quality of work by these would-be journalists. The edits are clean, the pacing is fantastic, it is funny without being forced. Take a good look stale-journalist, maybe you can learn something from this???

Years In The Making!

Well...it finally happened. I've officially outlived many of my peers! I want to thank everyone past and present who have made me the person I am today. The day was nearly perfect. I wish more people from my past would have been able to make it. I spoke about only three of my mentors from the past...mostly because I thought my 8-page speech was already too long. But really, I just talked about MSgts, since that is the grade I was being promoted to. I don't have the speech with me right now, but if you'd like to read my thoughts on the importance of being an NCO, send me an e-mail and I'll send it to you. Here are a few pics from the day. I'm sitting here right now with four different social media sites open, blogging on what I think is an open-source program; while listening to free streaming audio on Grooveshark. (Adele...Shelly's current fav!) I've already made four hyperlinks...five now! This morning I started off by catching up on my 30 RSS feeds...find out I'm not the only one suffering from a GMAIL slow down...and I start feeling sad! (Maybe it's because my oldest son isn't home) I realize although I'm somewhat super connected, I'm no where near as smart as I should be after spending countless hours on the internet. I guess I rely too much on my IT friends. (And my oldest son!) What would we do...err what would I do with out them. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Smooth E is a very funny comedian! He has produced several viral video's and I think once had the hottest vid on the net. Something like 10 trillion hits. I don't know...sometimes I make numbers up. Anyway, I like Smooth E, not only is he funny, but he is also generous! He produced several audio packages for use on Freedom Radio (page hasn't been updated in a long time) a couple of years ago. Pentagon May Have Mixed Propaganda With Public Affairs

The Pentagon's inspector general said yesterday that the Defense Department's public affairs office may have "inappropriately" merged public affairs and propaganda operations in 2007 and 2008 when it contracted out $1 million in work for a strategic communications plan for use by the military in collaboration with the State Department.

3-D Football Game...And...How I Really Need To Win FF!

Everywhere you look...HD! I love it. Unfortunately living in Italy means all of the HD content I watch comes from dvds or whatever we download. SKY does offer a few HD channels. SKY Sports has more, but we're not big European Football fans.

The National Football League wants to take the game to another level...a third demension if you will! Next week's game between San Diego and Oakland will be shot in 3-D! If only they picked two better teams. The Wall Street Journal has the rest.

AS for my Fantasy Football game. This weeks matchup is HUGE! It is a battle of 1st place teams. Multiple Scorgasm leads PACAF by one game at 9-3. My team: AFNBroadcaster P.A.B. (ask via e-mail and I'll tell you want it means) leads ACC by one game at 8-4. If I win...I take ACC and get a first round bye. If I lose...and Russell's Regulators wins, (which he will) then he wins the ACC on points. In years past, this is always where I lose and then get bumped out in the first round. Fingers crossed. OBTW: I was banking on my Brady/Moss combo to take me to paydirt.

KABUL (Reuters) – The U.S. general commanding NATO forces in Afghanistan has ordered a merger of the office that releases news with "Psy Ops," which deals with propaganda, a move that goes against the alliance's policy, three officials said.

Taliban militants, through their website, telephone text messages and frequent calls to reporters, are also gaining ground in the information war, analysts say.

How is it possible with all of the technology we have...with all of the training we have...with all of the intelegent, capable people...we can't win the information war? Maybe we should try to win using this tecnique: Leveraging Citizen Journalism

Deployed For The Holidays

It seems the American way of showing approval or disapproval of a person or product has once again worked. My trusted blog sydication service was VOTED...not needed anymore. The good news is, I've found an even better service. BlogPatrol will allow me to know exactly who is reading my blog. I'll know everything shy the persons social security number. This is great data to have. Knowing who reads my blogs will enable me to craft targeted messages. If it turns out people from differnt countries like Korea, Sudan, or maybe even Georgia are subscribing, maybe I could add a few words in that language. Not sure where this will go, but I'm VERY excited to see who is reading and more importantly how often.

Motivation - A New Broadcast Task II

Well...I took all of the advice from you...and a lot from a good friend of mine, Keith Reed and I think the class went very well. For sure I was motivated. In the process of preparing for this class I came up with another "Chris Eder tip of the day!" I shared my 20-60-20 rule. I believe only 20% of our current broadcaster pool really want to be broadcasters. 60% are along for the ride, and the last 20% is waiting for someone in the first 20% to show them how. Now, these numbers aren't exact science, rather another tool I can use to try and shake things up...stir the pot...and hopefully motivate folks to get fired up about being a broadcaster in the AF.

I'm working on a guided discussion class on how to motivate for a class I'm teaching/coaching/leading/mentoring with my good friend Chris Vadnais. Here is our motivation...behind the motivation:

Our career field, Broadcast Journalist merged with two other career fields: Videography and Graphics. For the first time, there is a possibility our co-workers may or may not want to be apart of this new job. Additionally, there are many perceptions, desires, work-flow issues, fears...that could affect the work climate. The bottom line there are folks at every echelon who may or may not want to be doing what they're slated to do. This is a challenge.

I ask you...my friends, champions of truth, knowledgable sages for help. What topics should we make sure we discuss? How do we capture the need for supervisors to make sure everyone is on-board? How do we mentor the supervisor who doesn't believe? How do we mentor the worker who doesn't believe?

Eastbound And Down...

We're loaded up and truckin' (I love it whenever I can make a Jerry Reed reference and show a video of Burt Reynolds)

The visas came in just after 1 PM. I guess that is good news, but I was hoping they wouldn't come in. You see, now we have to take a military-chartered flight. Don't get me wrong, this flight is super nice. Generally speaking there is more leg room on this flight than commercial carriers...However, the showtime is midnight for a 2 AM flight, it will be choke-full of kids, (I know I have three, but all of them are super quite)the booze isn't free, and it drops us off three and half hours away from where we will be living. The civilian flight on the other hand probably won't have as many kids, the booze is free, no crazy showtime, and it would have dropped us off 45-minutes from where we live. Either way..we're very excited to leave.

Ollie was pretty cool last night in the empty house. Shelly explained to him before we got there that there would be nothing in the house except the TV. I think that and the Happy Meal made it all cool. He really seemed to dig the echo in the house. Maddy and Ollie ran like crazy all over the house. By the time we got back to our apartment (hotel) they were beat.

DVR Content Promise...or Our Move!

My youngest is still having a tough time with our move to Italy. Last night we put some "DO NOT PACK" stickers on items staying with the house. Ollie didn't like it too much. He's having a difficult time piecing everything together. He still thinks we're only going for a 7-day trial. Well one of the items posted with a do not pack was our cable box. He wanted to know if we'd still get channel 17, 28...and his biggest question was whether or not we'd have free DVR content. Cox DVR also provides a ton of free content. Everything from cartoons to self-help. The truth is...yes, we will still get channel 17, 28...they just won't be the same as they are here. AFN only offers 8 different channels and no DVR. However...Sky Digital does!

Tonight we move into the hotel. If all goes well, we'll fly off to Italy on Monday morning.

What's In A Name?

To increase blog traffic, you need to know who you you're writing for and what you're writing about! My friends at audio'connell and The D-Ring both just wrote interesting blogs on this topic. I currently have three different blogs. One hasn't even started, the other is dependent on me being on the radio...and this one...Broadcast This! I think lately, it has been a bit scattered...at best. Does this draw people in? Or does it only feed my current friends and family? Well I think I should keep Broadcast This! focused on all things, well, broadcast! New media, challenges, tips, tricks, VO... Kasbah Radio will be focused on all things RADIO. Likewise, Opposites Attract will one day be about...well, I'm not sure yet.

So that brings us up to the present task at hand. What should I call my new blog? It will be about everything else I like to blog about. My day in the life type of stuff. I want to keep it sort of branded with Broadcast This! I'm thinking________________ This! Since, I'm a big fan of new media, and citizen journalism, I WANT YOU TO PICK THE NAME OF MY NEW BLOG! That's right! YOU! Send me in your name for my new blog, then I will post a poll on the side bar. Then starting 1 Jan 08, I will change the name. Are you in? 100,000 Miles of Memories, Now In Someone Else's Memory Book

First of all...YES this is an endorsement for craigslist! In just 15-minutes I sold my 1997 Isuzu Rodeo, complete with 100,000 miles of memories. We just shipped our Saab to Italy yesterday and were not sure how long it would take to sell the Rodeo, so we put it up today. Incredible! It seems like yesterday we bought it! Oh the memories...

I remember when we bought the car. I was playing volleyball in Sacramento, and Shelly was really baby-sick. I finished early with my games and I just happened to pick up an advertisement for Rodeo's. I drove over, started talking to a salesman, and got double fish hooked. I called Shelly, and like a trooper, against her better will, she agreed to come down to look at this car. Well, we didn't have enough to get a new Rodeo, but they had this one...last year's model available. So Shelly let me get it. She'll go on record that although she loved and loves the car, it isn't the one she wanted!

I remember the when I drove Maddy home from the hospital...I drove 25 mph the entire way...four months later when for some reason I thought I could drive from Sacramento to Salt Lake City in one day...Maddy let me know she wasn't happy! With a U-Haul trailer in-tow, I drove 85 mph for almost two hours.

I remember the first time Maddy got sick in the car. The first time Oliver got sick in the car...They were very similar. In fact, I think we were off to IKEA both times.
Well, today I sold the car to Noah, Amber, and Layla. Noah and Amber are a young couple, much like Shelly and I were. They are tall folks just like us too. It gets even more interesting. They drive a Honda Civic Hatchback and a beater. That is exactly what Shelly and I drove when we met. There was no way either of us was going to bend into a two-door. That was the first thing Amber said when she say the car..."I won't have to bend down anymore!"

So today, a new family gets to begin the next 100,000 miles of memories.

On a sad note...Ollie is very sad to see the Blue car go. As of right now, we don't have a car. That made him sad too. He said, now we can't go anywhere, we can only order food from the computer. I then showed all of the $100 bills I had and he got a real big smile on his face and said, maybe we could get a taxi!

Who Says There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch?

It all started some seven months ago with a simple e-mail to Voices.ComI must have sent around 30 e-mails that day. Basically, I listened to a ton of voices and sent an e-mail to every voice I liked. I was on my way to AFN Iraq for my second tour of duty and I wanted to freshen up the station image/sound. I had big dreams and was looking for someone (our a lot of someones) to help. About three or four radio stations made a handful of sweepers for the station...BUT...one guy did a lot more than a few.
(No I didn't lose an arm in Iraq!)

Charlie Glaize basically set Freedom Radio up! He voiced, and voiced and voiced. Then voiced some more. Before I even left for Baghdad I already had a few show openers, some liners/sweepers...and a bumber to play between almost ANY FREEDOM RADIO ARTIST Yep! Charlie sent me a liner block that said, "You know you're listening to Freedom Radio when you hear____________" then voiced more than 300 different artists. WOW! His generosity didn't stop there. I was still looking to add some more voices for other shows, when Charlie told me I should e-mail a Friend of his...Bob Souer. Bob quickly sent in three radio spots for my 36-Hour Memorial Day show. He then pointed me to VO-BB, where DB Cooper quickly put everything in line and amazed me with her organization skills. (I could easily write a blog on each of the talented VO folks who helped me out...but not today!)

Today is about Charlie. The two of us had lunch Sunday at The Bier Garden in Portsmouth. In a way, I'm glad no other VO's came. Have you ever met someone who you felt as though you've known them forever? Well Charlie fits that bill. We immediately began talking as if we'd been longtime friends. We talked about everything under the sun...and then some. Thanks Charlie!

So whoever says there's no such thing as a free lunch has never met Charlie. He not only sent me thousands of dollars worth of free VO-work, he also treated me to a great meal and some beer. What a country!

I Ran Today...or...What I Missed

Today I ran out to the marina and back. 3 miles if you're keeping track. This is the distance I normally run, however while in Iraq I found it very difficult. The obvious reasons of course: mortars, rockets, intense heat, and more rockets and mortars. The real tough part was the dust. I'm allergic to dust. I think I might also be allergic to dying too. (LOL) Anyway, it didn't take me long to realize I might be killing myself by trying to stay healthy in Iraq. I had to run on the treadmill which only hurt my knees. So fast forward to today. I ran out to the marina and back. I forgot how beautiful it is. The marsh and Chesapeake as my backdrop. My iPod blasting into TWO ear buds as there were no worries of "TAKE COVER" happening over the next three miles. All of the houses have been updated since I left for Iraq too. Other than the intense humidity, it was a great day to run.

With all that said...I think my next running grounds will provide an even better backdrop for me. One where I can lose myself in my surroundings and forget about how far or how long I've been running. Plus, I don't think Italy floods or have mosquitos that have their own Union.

I was surfing the inter-web (thanks AK) for the latests on what is sure to be this year's second biggest hit-reality show...The Next Great American Band...and the first thing I notice is how it is being advertised. YEP! Fox, who owns MySpace, is using MySpace for its advertisement. This soon-to-be bona fide hit show already has 23,096 friends, with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Scissor Sisters, and The Killers as their 1-3 friends. AHH Yeah...hold on America. Are you ready for this? Additionally, there are 1710 comments, and 545 topics.

But this is what I really think is a bit much. While surfing the web, I came across this site: Fox Reality Shows Prepare yourself to spend a ton of time scratching your head. Really? People are intersted in finding the Next Elvira? How big an audience share did The Littlist Groom pull?

I'm Home

Well after what seemed like an eternity, I finally made it home. The kids are all grown up. Shelly looked fantastic. Several of my co-workers met me at the airport. That was very special. THANKS!

I once again had a hard time sleeping last night. I was up at 4AM. Is it because I haven't yet adjusted to the new timezone, or is it because in just two and a half months the world as we know it is going to CHANGE???

Good Bye Yoga Friends

Over the past three and half months I've had the honor and privilege to guide a great group of yogis along a fantastic journey. Four days a week we all met up in a non-descript room inside Saddam's Palace at, for most, a god-awful time of day. 0600...or 6AM...or WAY TOO EARLY FOR MOST!

It started out as a half joke. When I moved from Freedom Radio to Freedom Journal Iraq, my hours seriously changed. I went from going to work at 4:30AM and getting home around 3:00PM to going to work at 7:30AM and not returning until sometimes 10:00PM. I was missing all of the evening Yoga classes and with the extra stress that comes with running a news section...I NEEDED TO RELAX and get back into YOGA! So I told my friend Elisa who works for Morale Welfare and Readiness...MWR for the folks who serve, they should get someone to teach a morning yoga class. Jokingly I said if needed I could teach. She said, "REALLY?" I shrugged my shoulders and said, "Sure!" Two weeks later, I was teaching a yoga class. Well, I think the first two or three weeks, my good friend, and Air Force Mom, Melinda Morgan was teaching the class. You see Melinda is a Yogi. She has been teaching for years and is well on her way in your yoga journey. I asked if she could help and within a few days, she sent me a one hour class...complete with movement and breathe cues. It wasn't long before I had enough people in the class that we made the Saturday class a more advance class. More and more people who had never worked out before, let alone practice yoga kept coming out. Not pictured is a man who should be an inspiration for all. Bill, my Silver Fox, is in his late-60's. The oldest of three brothers. Never was into working out. All of his brothers lettered in at least two sports. Now, late in life, giving all that's left to help out the people in Iraq, he decided he'd finally try this yoga thing everyone is talking about. With no alarm clock to wake him, Bill routinely came to the class, asked great questions, and with some modifications, learned a basic routine which undoubtedly will change his life.

On average 8 folks would come out to the class. However, there was a strong core of friends who came out routinely. Dave, Kristen, Jeff, Kathryn, and Bill (Silver Fox) My Chief would come out every Friday! He swears he's and inch taller now. Toward the end of my tour Diane, Jenna, Pallas, and the Sgt Major came out. The last two were a hoot, they're from Boston. As many of you know I'm a sucker for an accent. I could listen to them talk for hours!

Turns out, leading a yoga class is very tough! In yoga you breath in and out of your nose...try doing that and talk at the same time...It took me a bit to learn how to master that skill. Balanced Airplane...also not that easy. We tried to take it up a few notches on the Saturday class. Some Saturdays turned into more of a laugh fest than actual yoga as we'd spend more time falling all over the place in an attempt to perform more advanced yoga poses.
To the left is one of my favorite poses and vinyasas: Triangle Pose, which I linked with Warrior 1, 2, Reverse Warrior, Pyramid, and Side Straddle Fold. When you link several poses together in a logical flow its called a vinyasa. This is a very powerful vinyasa! Today I introduced the class to several other poses including Revolved Triangle. Most poses you can "revolve: which basically means: keep feet in place and switch hands and direction you're twisting. The best thing about yoga is it's not a competition. You don't have to do what the instructor or others are doing. You do what your body allows.

I had only these three resolutions this year. Yoga is fantastic! It helps with my ADD, it adds balance, it does wonders for your core strength, and generally changes your over-all quality of life. No matter what sport you're into...yoga and help your game. Besides...what I really like about yoga...I get to sleep the last 10-15 minutes of the class...NOW THAT IS SOMETHING EVERYONE LIKES TO DO!

Mustache Update As Promised

This week my wife called me and told me my daughter cried and locked herself in the bathroom when she heard I had a mustache. She asked that I shave it off before I come home. OHHH THAT WILL HAPPEN. This thing which now calls my top lip home is horrible. It is very difficult for me. I guess the whole purpose of War Whiskers is all about it not being easy. It is not easy for the people of Iraq to come to terms and take the appropriate actions to become a thriving nation. Much like it is very difficult for me to live with this thing! It makes a horrible crunching noise when I drink water. Its grown to the point where it catches the corner of my eye. I always think there is some kind of bug on my lip. Besides that, it always scares me when I catch a glance of it in a mirror. With that said, my co-worker and currently the one I hold ultimately responsible for my new look, which kind of reminds me of my dad...brought it to my attention, we (Freedom Journal Iraq) might be the most mustached news team EVER. 7 out of 8 of us are rocking the War Whiskers. (Poor Timmy is too young to grow a mustache! We love him anyway.)

What Will I Miss? What Won't I Miss?

I'm about two weeks out from returning back to my wife and kids. My first weekend home has already been booked out to playing with the kids, quite time with my wife, and NFL Sunday...actually on Sunday. Complete with Margaritas, salsa verde, and chips. The following is a list of things I'll miss and not miss after I leave:

What will I miss:
1) Seeing the Al Rasheed everyday on the way to work. The events that happened in that building have changed me forever.
2) BACON! As little or as much as I want.
3) A sense of duty and accomplishment.
4) A routine that rarely changes.
5) The smell of eucalyptus trees.
6) Working with my new VO friends. (I will keep in touch!)

What I won't miss:
1) BACON! As little or as much as I want.
2) Any sort of meat product in mass quantities.
3) MY MUSTACHE!
4) Carrying a weapon 24/7.
5) A routine that rarely changes.
6) Seeing the Al Radheed. It often brings tears to my eyes.
7) DIRT EVERYWHERE! Did you know I'm allergic to dust?
8) Salt stains because I sweat too much.
9) Doing laundry at 5AM in the same place nasty dudes do.
10) BEING AWAY FROM MY FAMILY. I MISS THEM A LOT!

Decisions Part 2- The Worse

My grandpa once told me everyday I'd have dozens of decisions to make. He told me decisions were easy to make...but the consequences of my decisions could be tough to bear. Well a month ago, I made the worse decision of my life!

In an attempt to build the broadcasters I work with into a fine tuned team, I bet them they couldn't achieve what seemed to be an impossible goal. By now I hope you've read my blog, my co-worker's blog!, and the Air Force Times! Some of you may have even clicked over to the Multi-National Force Iraq website to see me on TV...plus catch up on all the progress Coalition Forces are making throughout Iraq! I want to thank my friends and family who sent some real nice words:

My wife...well is my life...and she completes me. Whoever said opposites attract...WAS RIGHT! She is quite and complete. I'm loud and quick. She is cautious and sure. I'm free and spirited. I think the differences stop there. She loves with all of heart, I wear my heart on my sleeve. She is a perfect compliment. She also is a fantastic mom...she always puts the kids first and loves them completely!

I've Lost A Bet...Or Have I???

It all started about two and a half months ago when I moved from radio into the news department. My colleague...friend...my #2 authored this blog! If you decide not to click the link, here is a quick excerpt:

So, me and some of the guys here are letting our lustrous lip locks grow out over the course of our deployment. As you can see, this is quite a monumental task for some. And it is not for the faint of heart or lily livered. Two "men" (I use the term loosely) have already broken the pact we made and shaved because people told them they looked silly. And theirs looked about 57 times better than mine does. I am fully aware that by the end of my time in Iraq, there will still be no part of my mustache that you won't be able to see straight through, not unlike the fine, downy sheen of a fresh picked peach. But I am undeterred. Because these whiskers, all 26 or so of them, stand for something. I like to think of them as a microcosm of Iraq.

Nick goes on to tie his horrible looking caterpillar mustache to the overall war effort and wraps everything up with this:

Once again, we are HERE. Now. We won't get a second chance at this, and if we don't get it right, we'll face a threat that doesn't care about who you voted for or what your bumper stickers say. Watch the news, read up on what's going on over here. We're closer than we've ever been. The Surge is working, the Government of Iraq is progressing (albeit not quickly enough for some), and the people here want to see their government succeed. None of this will happen if we pull out too soon. We've started this mustache. Let's not shave before giving it a chance to grow.

I laughed at these horrible mustache as they began to slowly appear atop several of my co-workers lips. I thought for sure this silly idea would never prove to have staying power. Within the first two weeks of this plan several co-workers quickly shaved their lips. I had been asked several times to grow my mustache out! Ha I said. Do you know who you're asking to grow a mustache? I'm one of the most vain persons you've ever met. Really...Look up Merriam Websters definition of vain...It's my picture! So I said "NO!" Surely this poorly plotted plan would flop! NOPE! Instead it gained speed. Air Force Times picked it up! Read more...

Well as I took over the news team...there were many nights where we stayed late into the night putting together the nightly newscast. At the time, we had eight broadcasters working as individuals. We were working hard, but not smart. There were some highs, and some lows. After several morning meetings/mentoring/training/team building...the eight slowly began to work as a team. In a almost last ditch effort to bring them the final ten-yards to being a full-fledged team...I challenged them. I said if they could get the newscast done five straight nights by 5:30, I would grow a mustache to support the cause...I thought surely even if we hit our stride, there were enough uncontrollable variables that would prevent us from completing this task five consecutive nights.

WELL! It happened. Today was the fifth straight night...and it was a challenge. We had a no-notice press conference today that lasted nearly three hours. Yet, some how, we still pulled it off. So today, I begin to grow out my lip hair in support of my team. A team, I'm very proud to be apart of. A team, which I can easily say, is the best team I've ever been apart of. A team, who undoubtedly are leaving one hell of a fingerprint on the history of Iraq. Viva Stache!

Just finished watching "The Quiet American." Anyhow...despite Brendan Frazier being a bad actor in the movie...it made me think about combat journalism and what stories you might be covering. Are you allowed to tell us what kinds of stories you're covering in the news over there?

So I want to take a few minutes of your time to tell you what YOUR military is doing over here and then show you how Freedom Journal Iraq is covering it. We're right in the middle of the "Surge of Operations." These operations are designed to seek out and remove Al Qaeda in Iraq, rouge and splinter groups of the Jaysh Al Maddi, Iranin Cupds Corp, and any other enemy of Iraq or Coalition Forces. The success of these operations by themselves will not result in a victory in Iraq. Rather, they will provide the time and space needed for Iraqi lawmakers to develop a fair and equitable Rule of Law and enable Iraqis take the lead in their own country. Freedom Journal Iraq is committed to highlighting success and progress being made by Coalition and Iraqi Forces...Kinetic and Non-Kinetic. Kinetically, we continue to detain insurgents, capture or kill terrorists, find weapons caches, and drop bombs on the bad guys. These type of operations is what you generally see in the media. However, you see all of the negative fall out from it. Here is what you missed:

With every victory on the battlefield, more and more local citizens are stepping up to defend their own cities. There is a buzz surrounding "Concerned Citizens." The Commanding General in Iraq, Dave Petraeus routinely walks through neighborhoods which months ago were ravaged by insurgents and zapped of their livelihood and shows the progress being made. You may have never heard about how cities up and down Iraq are returning to "normal!"

Last week we highlighted all of the Non-Kinetic success in Iraq. We had the Army Corp of Engineers, Gulf Region Division come in and talk about all of the electricity sub-stations, water systems, schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure projects completed and under way in Iraq.

Of course we also spend a great deal of time talking about capturing high ranking Al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists. We have two ways of telling this story. One is called a Look Live that we package in our newscast and send out to the Pentagon Channel for broadcast. The other is a brand new element called the "Raid Report." This product is a true testament to the quality of broadcasters I have on my team over here. I basically said, "Hey, I've got an idea...I think it should look like this..." Those who know me, I like to pretend I can draw, so I took my recycled paper on my desk a drew a rough sketch of what I was thinking about. This is the final result:

No matter what side of the political agenda you find yourself...rest assured the men and women of the Armed Forces are making a difference in Iraq. You'll have to make up your own minds as far as the current political climate. REMEMBER TO VOTE!

Digital or Analog?

I always thought there were two types of people in this world...Journey fans...and liars. Well, my good friend Chris from jacksnupple believes I'm wrong. He may be on to something. Chris believes folks are classified into two different categories: ANALOG or DIGITAL

In a blog titled Secrets Chris claims to be an uber-digital.
I am digital. I am Bobby Friggin' Digital. I'm borderline nerding out most of the time. You should see me in an Apple retail store–my geek meter peaks.

The blog is pretty funny and it made me think? Am I a digital or an analog? Well I know for a fact I'm no analog. That was easy...or was it? In today's world, everyone is labeled and then sub-labeled...and sometimes even sub-sub-labeled. Long gone are the days of being a a simple something! It is impossible to be just a Democrat, or Republican. You're a leftist, or conservative. These labels even reach into religion and nationalities. Are you a Southern Baptist or a light skinned brother?
With this new found knowledge of being either analog or digital...I asked myself: Are there different levels of classification within these two categories? I know I'm not a analog, but I'm not sure if I'm a digital. Maybe digital-lite. Possibly, I'm a Hack Hag...totally analog, but I hang around a bunch of digitals, because I feel safe around them. I have a lot of friends who are totally digital. Maybe I'm a closet digital? How do I tell my parents I'm a digital? Is it best not to come out of the closet? I surround myself with digitals and can dork out with the best of them, but when in mixed company I'll claim I really don't know what all this 1 and 0 stuff is all about. I'll never admit openly I know the secrets, however, know most of them, or at least I know who does!

So...ARE YOU AN ANALOG OR A DIGITAL?

Vacation To Doha

YES! This must mean I'm at least half way done here! The truth is I'm more than half way. I don't really know how many days I have left. Ollie and Maddy do. They have a cool paper chain they made. For me, I don't want to know. I keep my mind focused on work and staying safe. I feel the harder I work, the more focused I am...the faster my time will fly by. I'm pretty sure my replacement Dorlinda will be here in time for me to leave. So, until she gets here...I will just keep on...keeping on. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS POST IS ABOUT!

It's about my four days in Doha Qatar...I've been on hundreds of trips all over the world, and this one ranks right up there in the top 10. The R&R facility is staffed with some world-class folk and the place is set up just for folks like me to completely chill-out, or blast all over the place at max speed. I did a little of both.

Most of my military friends will tell you the best part of R&R to Doha is...BEER! Truth be told, the beer was pretty good! We're limited to three beers a day, and that turned out to be just right. 22oz Black and Tans times three times four nights equals...a pretty good time. The Top Off was the place to be every night from 6PM until 2AM. They had pool tables, darts, and my beloved FOOSBALL.

Every night I played Foosball with our little group. George, my roommate, Chris, and Tom. We met the two of them during in-processing. Chris and I were an unstoppable team. He destroyed everyone...and we didn't spin!

By week's end, I met several new friends, sang karaoke...even was asked to sing accompanied by a guitar, ate my fair share of great food, and was completely relaxed.

The move into the News department has taken its toll on me and my addiction to blog. It appears it also had an effect on my friends and family. I want to first say, "I'M ALIVE AND WELL!" There was a two week period where there was only two folks in news. My team was only four-strong. Today, there are 9 of us! Last week I went on my R&R. One fantastic week in Doha Qatar. (Another blog to come!)

So do I fill my days and weeks with? Why haven't I been hitting the web? Mostly because I spend 12-14 hours in the office. I love being in charge of the news. I've had to break out every single organizational and leadership tool I have! Although I miss radio, I'm loving news. It doesn't hurt that I have a great team. When I do come home, I usually watch a show or two, then. I still get up at the butt-crack of dawn. Plus, I've decided to kick my workouts up a notch or two:

Although I'm not certified I've been leading these classes. It is a very different workout and it really forces me to stay on it. Breathing, teaching, and time management. The class is averaging 7 folks, but yesterday 14 showed up.

All Good Things Must End

My three month run as Kasbah on Freedom Radio...the station just for you...IS OVER! My team and I worked hard. We fixed an error causing us not to be able to insert local information while on satellite. We deleted 45% of the content on our automation hard drive. This was all old, duplicate, or junk. This was causing a 1-2 day delay in transfer time. Now content transfers in about 10 seconds. We completely refreshed the radio imaging library...completely refreshed the music library...deleted 75 crappy commercials and replaced them with 100 better ones. We developed four massive campaigns aimed at key messages...and designed an automation scheme that allows for immediate push of hot issues. Freedom Radio and Freedom Radio News are now "BRANDED." People are talking about them and the jocks! There is a longer string of "important" stuff we did, but here is the cool part:

WE HAD A TON OF FUN!
I've had the privilege to work with some really strong, professional broadcasters. Plus, I've made a lot of new friends in the Voice Over world. By my quick broadcaster, public math...they've donated more than $10,000 worth of time and content to Freedom Radio. I plan to keep these friends forever!!!! These folks have done just about anything I've asked...for free! I really think these guys will be friends for life. (Both VO and broadcasters) The list is too long to hyperlink all their names. We got to do two EPIC countdowns...The Memorial Day Countdown and the Firecracker 500. By the way...we're not finished. Over Labor Day we plan to do a Rock A-Z show. This will be the icing on the cake!!!

So what is next???

I'm now heading up a team of nine in the news department. Freedom Journal Iraq produces a nightly 10-minute cast and a daily 1-minute cast. News is a challenge for me. It forces a guy with ADD to have to slow down, read, and understand. Plus I have to be uber-organized.

My #1 goal in news is to be light, lean, and lethal. I'm all about streamlining and empowerment. To that end...my friend Mark Glaser over at PBS' MediaShift is apart of a real big project! The question (project)???? How would you build a newsroom from scratch?

A lot of the brightest minds in journalism have been thinking for some time about how the newsroom of the future might operate as we move from legacy print and broadcast operations into a more converged, Internet-centric world. I’ve taken a couple stabs myself at how a “New Newsroom” might operate, both in a guest post on PressThink in 2004 and on a recent post on MediaShift.

And now there are a series of discussions taking place called Journalism That Matters , where various deep thinkers are trying to literally invent “the next newsroom” prototype. Here is the blurb describing what they’re going to try to accomplish in Washington, DC, in early August:

Our goal is to facilitate critical discussion on the future and sustainability of journalism. Our unique approach is to first assemble editors, publishers, writers, researchers, academics, entrepreneurs, public advocates, independent and citizen journalists for fast, focused discussion. We’ll then define the ownership, management, location and sustainability of a ‘next newsroom’ prototype in at least one U.S. community, to launch in early- to mid-2008.

We’re going to answer this call: Pick an ideal location, and start a news organization from scratch, using the best-available technology and ideas, and without the obligations or burdens of legacy processes or infrastructure. Where will it be, what will it look like, who will own it, and how will it run.

What a great question and project. This will be the empowerment question for my news team. Look out world...Here comes Freedom Journal Iraq...Your source for news that matters!

I've Been Promoted!

I was pretty bummed when I found out I didn't get promoted to E-7 this cycle. I studied real hard, but not hard enough obviously! Seems I wasn't the only one who felt pretty bummed. One of my new friends Ron Phillips (VO-BB), jokingly said he was going to get me promoted...one way or the other. I assume this is "the other" way he was talking about. All laughs aside, I'm very honored for this promotion. In fact, so was my Chief. He called everyone to attention and read the below letter.

I think if anyone, my Uncle Jim will be the proudest of this promotion. He's lived in Kentucky for like "ever!"

With this promotion comes the secret recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken and a lifetime supply of Kentucky Moonshine. I can only share the later with all of you!

10 Reasons There’s a Bright Future for Journalism

One of my favorite blogs is MediaShift with Mark Glaser. I interviewed Mark for background information on my proposal on how to leverage Airmen to help win the information war. His latest question to journalists: Is the journalism cup...half empty, or half full. The response motivates me in these changing times. It comes at a moment where I need to be motivated. That story is still a few days away.

There’s been a lot of debate lately about the future of newspapers, the future of TV, the future of radio — the future of journalism itself — in the face of drastic change brought by technology and the Internet. I’ve asked MediaShift readers whether they thought journalism’s metaphorical cup was half empty or half full and most people saw a pretty bright future.

As you might imagine, I share their enthusiasm for the future, and wouldn’t be writing this blog if I didn’t believe we will end up in a better place. But I’m also a hardened realist and natural skeptic, and I know there are painful months and years ahead for the (dwindling number of) people working in traditional media. Not everything new and shiny will be good for us, and there are plenty of ethical and technological pitfalls ahead.

But rather than dwell on the negative, rail against change, or damn the upstarts at Google and Craigslist, I’d like to take a walk on the sunny side of life in new media, consider the positive aspects of all that is happening, and how we could end up in a renaissance era for journalism. While I do believe large media companies will have the most difficult time adapting to the changes, they can learn a lot from the successful business models of smaller sites such as TMZ or The Smoking Gun (both owned by media companies).

One Of Those Days

I just had the worse day since I've been here. It started out really weird. I woke up and was mad for some reason! I don't know why...I worked out last night! (ABS class, toughest workout in the International Zone!) I watched Family Guy too! I had a pretty important task to do while I was on the morning show. I had to fix some audio on an interrogation video. The audio was really bad. Turns out the only thing you can make with crappy audio, is really crappy audio. From there everything just started to crumble.

Since Memorial Day I've been feverishly working on trying to out do 36-straight hours of epic rock broadcasting...The team and I came up with the Firecracker 500. 50-straight hours of epic rock broadcasting. Thus, really only a bit shy of 'twice as good as Memorial Day.' I'm ok with that! Once again I have my new friends and maybe one day colleges from VO-BB working with me on the Firecracker 500. This is a very difficult task to pull off. Its now tougher, because the ARMY folks will no longer be available to help out! I lost 20-hours of help! AHHHH!

THEN...I have this really talented friend named SPC Emily Green who I call my producer and we do the Hollywood Report twice a week...she goes by Natasha...she just got moved to a mid shift...which means she'll no longer be able to be Natasha on my show!!! Its one of my favorite elements on my show.

To make matters worse...there is a sorta-sand storm right now, so I can't even go lay out by the pool!

The only shining moment...We're just about to update the Freedom Radio website. Here is a picture of all of the new jocks:

My Birthday...Late Post

I was hoping for Shelly to jump out of a cake...not that we're that type of couple, but that would have been great! Instead, like most nights in Baghdad I was greated with unwanted fireworks. I did get a surprise slice of cake and some fifty folks sing me happy birthday in the dinning facitlity. I got a homemade card from the kids, a cd and new sandles from Shelly, some iTunes cash, salami, cheese, and pistachios just new a few things. Father's Day was better. I got to webcam with my kids. I love talking with them. Then dinner...I had prime rib, lobster, asperagus and mac and cheese.

Eventhough I had a good time, I wish I was at home with my wife and kids. Only four more months to go!

New Invention

This is what I posted on my "Living In The Information World" discussion forum today. The question was what would you like to see invented in the future. Most of my classmates said robots, talking computers, or cures. I was going to go for a 'cure,' but I got really bored reading their pedestrian ideas. I hope you enjoy my idea:

Today it was 120 in the shade at 2:00pm. Today's war has brought me to one of the hottest places in the world. The days are getting longer and the gear I wear, heavier. There is no end in sight. The potentional for future wars are also in hot locals. I sweat in places where I shouldn't. I sweat in places I didn't know existed. I sweat in places I wish I never had to sweat! The invention I wish...err...want...err...NEED, is a cooling/misting orb. This orb, much like my dual zone cooling system and ventilated seats in my Saab 9-5 Aero, would ensure the proper cabin, or uniform temperature. If needed, or requested, it would also ventilate me in any and all areas. Unlike my Saab, my orb would also have the ability to mist me with micro-blasts of energy-boosting water. This water can also be swapped out for vodka when not in uniform. If any of you can help me with this invention, let me know.

Well I am going to OKC next week for my last B52 meeting, when I get back I have three days of work. Then I will be hanging up 37 years of service.

For the past 37-years, my dad has answered the call to service in support of my beloved United States Air Force, and your United States of America. He moved from town to town with his professional skills and commitment in tow. There were many sacrifices made over the past 37-years. None more important than the next. For almost four decades, my dad pulled long hours, traveled the world, and in short, pulled his fair share toward ensuring the freedoms we take for granted.

Dad...I'm sorry I won't be able to make it to your retirement. You see...I like you am committed! And right now, that commitment has brought me to Baghdad Iraq! I wish you well. Maybe in 20 more years...you will come to my retirement! I love you and THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE & COMMITMENT.

This is what a half portion of bacon looks like here in the International Zone. Those of you who really know me...know I LOVE BACON! I would be pressed to think of anything that wouldn't taste better with bacon on it. Bacon is available for all three meals. This is a problem! It's like my crack...if I actually took crack, well, I guess I kind of do. Anyway, I've put the entire radio team on red alert. They must keep me away from the evil BACON! Have I mentioned you can put bacon in a pita with roast beef, cabbage, provolone, yellow bell peppers and olive oil, then fold it in half and press in on a paninni grill? YUMMY!

Even though I've had my years allotment of bacon in my first three weeks in Iraq, I've still managed to drop another five pounds. Making my official weight loss for the year at 37 pounds. I'm right where I want to be and will add the pounds back..only this time it will be muscle. Yoga three times a week and running & weight training three times a week.

I've adopted my friend Cindy's deployed breakfast: Special K with berries.

Her Name Is Paula...Al Rasheed Revisted

The other night I spent several hours in a "duck and cover!" It was my first time in one. There were no such safe-havens in 2003. I had my mattress and my Brent! (SrA Brent Skeen)

Inside the duck and cover, my home away from home, I met several new friends. You'd be amazed what people want to talk about when mortars are falling from the sky. One Soldier's wife called...He had to hung up on her. Others where talking about how close they were falling, or where they were last time. A few of them were talking about the injuries and deaths they've seen caused by mortars.

Someone asked me what I did, so I told them I was the morning show host on Freedom Radio, 107.7 Baghdad, 107.3 Balad....My story continued as I told them about the original crew who set AFN Iraq up in 2003. From there...Al Rasheed...October 23rd. I get chills to this day when I think of the horrifying events of the day. As I told my story a man chimed in..."You helped Paula didn't you?" I sad who is Paula. He replied, "The civilian that was injured!" I asked if she had blond hair, and if she was the one who had her arm blown off. The answer...YES! "Her name is Paula, and because of all of those who provided medical attention to her...she has her arm today." Turns out, the doctors were able to reattach Paula's arm.

I visited the Al Rasheed yesterday. Many of the merchants who set up shop in 2003 are still there, but other than that, the Rasheed is a shell of itself. I too was a shell of my former self...until now. Today, I know who the lady was I helped in her time of need...Paula. Little did I know my actions would have such an impact on someones life. Little does Puala know that her story has also changed mine.

A Day Off...And No Trouble...Well Kind Of!

Today was my day off. In 2003, my first day off was really BAD! October 26th 2003 will forever be apart of my life. (The flak vest Paul Wolfowitz is wearing is mine!) My second day off in 2003 wasn't as bad, but it too was cut short. December 13th was an emotional roller coaster. In a packed press conference room, Ambassador Paul Bremmer spoke the following famous words, "Ladies and gentlemen...we got him!" The room exploded with emotion. For nearly 20 minutes Iraqis screamed, shouted, cursed and cried. It was an incredibly intense moment. After that day off, I told my boss, Erik Brazones, I no longer wanted another day off!

Well this day off wasn't nearly as bad as 2003. In fact, it was no where near as bad. I had a ton of homework to make up since I've been in transit for the past nine days. First on the docket...math! I HATE MATH! The deal is, if I pass a pre-test, then I don't have to accomplish the homework. Sounds like a good deal. The bad news is, I missed two, too many questions. The worse news is, I challenged them with the instructor by e-mail, only to work them out again to figure out, I indeed did get them wrong. (WAH WAH WAAH!) I know it is hard to complain about the extremely slow Internet, (I keep waiting to hear those old 54K modem dial-up noises) because last time I was here...there was no Internet. Well the math work took all day to do. I still have a paper to write on Security and Privacy on the Internet. I have to use two different search engines and a library database, compare and contrast the two, and use criteria from a reading lesson to answer several questions.

I had to clear my head, so I took a yoga class. There are nine different classes here. The one I took was billed as "power yoga." I've taken several power yoga classes in the past...well this was different. It was a "combat" power yoga. Not what I really wanted, but definitely what I need. It was really tough. I think it had a lot of pilates included. Half way through the class we did 400 crunches non-stop. (I didn't do all 400...more like 100-150-ish.)

177 Days and Counting!

Well...it took a bit of time to get here, but I made it! The trip started off with a visit with the Secretary of Labor, Mrs. Elaine L. Chao. She was celebrating National Volunteer Week.

From Baltimore I flew into Ramstein. My friend Charlie Gill came through in the bottom of the ninth inning and brought me one of my favorite foods in the world...A DONER KEBAB! I think Charlie just might be my new best friend. At least he was that day. It was really good to catch up with him. It seems the Det at Ramstein is looking forward to the future AFNEWS structure.

From there I spent a few days at a great island retreat. This place is used as a Rest and Recuperation spot. The day we arrived they were celebrating Spring. They had a cool band playing. They're called, An American Band and they play in the local area.

The music was really good. All of the troops started a conga line...

We're not the only folks who use the base for R&R. These Brits showed up and they were the life of the party.

I found this guy practicing the military motto, "Hurry up and wait!"

I start my first on-air shift in the morning. I'm a bit rusty, so I'm making the morning crew come in an hour earlier than normal. They didn't seem too upset about that. I'll snap some pictures of the new stomping grounds tomorrow.

Thoughts About Life

As I sat in the airport on April 19th, the day I left for Baghdad, I watched husbands, wives, families, men, women, and kids come and go. I wondered where they were heading. I wondered if they knew where I was heading. Last call for Las Vegas at gate 5. I sure would love to go there again! Hit my favorite little dive for some Mexican food.

I was a wreck that morning. Eyes puffy and red with the occasional tear. Was this the life my mom and dad imagined I'd live? Is this the life Shelly signed up for? How much longer can I live this life? How much longer will the family want me to live this life? What life will I live when I leave this one? I've been doing this for 17-years. I love it. Well, I really love most of it, the rest I tolerate. But the part I love...I really, really love.

I'm a very optimistic person. I enjoy meeting people. Shelly calls me a 'wanderer.' I don't really enjoy sleeping in hotels alone, but I do enjoy the feeling of coming home to my family. I don't think the kids like it so much when I come and go. They generally like the gifts I bring back.

I turn 35 in one week. I know that isn't old, rather just a stopping point to check-in with my life. John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change," has a great line in it. To me its almost a call to action. Mayer writes, " One day our generation is going to rule the population." I've not stopped thinking about how that day is NOW! What am I doing to help "rule the population?" What will I do when I leave the Air Force to help "rule the population?"

My first choice is to follow my dad's footsteps and continue to serve the Air Force as a civilian. There are plenty of jobs available in the same career field I'm in right now...minus all of the vacations to Iraq. Which is a HUGE bonus. But a very close second choice is....teaching. I've spent a lot of brain power thinking about being a school teacher. For the Department of Defense of course, that way we can all stay in Europe. The part I struggle with the most when it comes to teaching is: what grade?

Saying Goodbye (Times 2)

They always say good things come in two's...RIGHT? Well in my case it is! How appropriate that I leave the same day American Idol sensation and teenage heart throb, Sanjaya left American Idol. For Shelly, it is kind of a two for one deal! (THIS IS HUMOR...NOT REAL)

I have a long 1-3 day journey ahead of me. I leave behind my world-class, top-of-the-line, (not an appliance) loving wife. Of all the people I've meet over the years, she is the only one qualified to live the life I've asked her to live. For that I will always love her and be indebted to her. All three of my kids are at different cross-roads in their lives. Each needing a little more attention and a gentle touch to help them through. I wonder...How tall will Nigel be? Will Ollie's tooth EVER fall out? Will Maddy still be Daddy's girl? How much wine is going to be needed when I return?

To all of my extended family and friends: THANK YOU for all of the kind words and all of the offers to help Shelly. You truely are all very special people. Thanks!

Citizen Journalism...Say Hello to Citizen Radio

I think I'm on to something again. Could there possibly be a need for Citizen Radio? Not pirate radio, where someone with a stack of albums pirates a signal and plays the music of their choice...rather...a group of professionals who just want to help the other guy out!

I sent out a message to a friend of mine who is a Senior Account Executive for
Eastman Radio Atlanta, Inside Radio and to a handful of morning show hosts, and voice over talent. I told them the story of Freedom Radio and asked if they'd like to help...They did! So far 25 folks have stepped up to the plate to voice liners like this one!

I Finally Read A Book! (Non Self-Help)

It has been longer than I can remember the last time I read a book...an entire book, that wasn't about grammar, music, broadcasting, or leadership. I hate to admit it, but I hate reading fiction and rarely have the need to read an entire book. I'm good after about 3 chapters. This book took me nearly a month to read. A chapter here, a chapter there. There are two things that strike me about this book. 1) The author has a masters degree in English, writes for Rolling Stone and DJ's on the local radio station...So it isn't too far from what I've been reading. 2) This is a SAD book. He lost the love of his life! Married for just a short while...she died. It shook the foundation of his soul...his life was over. It made me cry, made me wonder how it is in his shoes. Not what I normally read...I like it light, funny, and quick.

If you love music, well written sentences, and an occasional expletive...this book is a must read.

Combat Correspondent

It finally happened. Radio/Television Broadcast Journalists in the Air Force are now called:

COMBAT CORRESPONDENTS

With the help of my boss, I crafted a proposal to change our name to Combat Correspondent...and it was approved. I can't take all the credit...I'd like to, but there were others who had a say. I was the only one who brought in the dictionary and a grammar book.

So what does this mean? Am I now equal to my Marine buddy Troy? Although this picture doesn't prove it...he is a true Combat Correspondent.

Troy and I went on a dismounted patrol in Nov 2003, through the town of Beji Iraq. It was about two weeks before they found Saddam...just a few miles away. Armed with our camera, tripod, 9-mil, and this HUGE SFC...we walked the streets. Troy set up to grab the footage of the patrol storming into a house where suspected terrorists were. He was BRAVE! He had his camera and head exposed to possible danger. Me! I was about ten fellas back...with the tripod. Does this make a Combat Correspondent? Troy is...me...well maybe!

1) Haley finally got the boot. I feel vindicated because Gina went home last week.
2) I get to eat Mexican food today for lunch...it's my going away lunch and I love, love, love salsa verde.
3) Shelly and I set up the webcams last night.

What is this blog? Does it bite? Will it hurt? DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE BLOG!

Many of you have sent e-mail responses to me on my blog. Thank you. However, the beauty of blogs is the ability to interact with everyone...I'll show you how! I'm going to write a blog about a blog.

Wikipedia describes blogs:

A blog is a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of most early blogs.

This is my on-line, interactive journal. I want you to be apart of it. How? Easy. Simply press the comment button at the end of each blog you read. It will bring up a dialog box. (Don't get scared of these big words) Type in anything you want. Like: Great post Chris, you're really smart. Or, WOW! Chris I didn't know you knew that I knew that you know. Anything you want.

Some common misconceptions about leaving a comment are that you need a blog page of your own to leave a comment, or some kind of secret password. Both wrong. If you have a blogger page, or a g-mail account that is a plus, (I have 97 more g-mail invites if you want one) but it isn't necessary. You can leave a comment and select "Other." Leveraging Citizen Journalism in the Air Force

In a recent letter from the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General Mosley said, "every Airman is an ambassador...we need them to tell their story." I'd argue a good few already are! I've spent the better part of the past two weeks researching citizen journalism. I've talked to and emailed some real heavy hitters in this area. I've spent hours in debate with my peers. I even wrote a story about how I really don't support it. HERE! Turns out I do! The question is...how can something so raw and real happen in the Air Force? I thought I was a trail blazer in this area, but it turns out the trail has already been blazed by Steve Field...kind of. I pitched this idea to some senior officials at the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Public Affairs. It may not be perfect, but I think it is both a good start and good enough to start.

ARE WE WINNING?

During an intelligence brief, an uncertain technical sergeant on his way out the door for his first deployment asked this question, “Are we winning?” The briefer paused, squinted his war-hardened eyebrows and replied, “Winning what?” There was silence for nearly a minute, when from the back row, a senior airman whose job in the Air Force is to sing for the Air Force Reserve Band, stood up and said, “If you question if we’re winning, you’ve already lost!”

WOW! What an eye-opening comment from such a junior member of the Air Force. I believe she’s right.

If you ask your neighbor about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they’re most likely to mention the dangers Soldiers face during convoy operations, Improvised Explosive Devices; or how the Marines are getting spread too thin. What they don’t know is Airmen from every career field face the same dangers. What they don’t know is that Air Mobility Command has flown more than 328,000 sorties and moved more than 5-million troops. What they don’t know is on an average 1,000 wounded troops are evacuated on Air Force planes each month. What they don’t know is approximately 23,000 Airmen are deployed across the Untied States Central Command’s Area of Responsibility at 23 operating locations.

WHY DON’T THEY KNOW THIS?

According to Colonel Thomas Diehl, Director of United States Central Command Air Forces Public Affairs at the Combined Air Operations Center in Southwest Asia, “If you don’t take the picture, don’t tell it, it didn’t happen!” It’s kind of like the tree that falls in the woods. Does it make a noise when it crashes to the earth if no one is there to hear it?

Today’s civilian news media is all about generating revenue. Unfortunately, scandalous pictures from Abu Ghraib, IED attacks, and possible misconduct on the battlefield take center stage in the quest for the almighty greenback. To make matters worse, when we public affairs professionals or expert journalists write, we do so in a manner only we and a select few understand. Washington Post staff writer Howard Kurtz recently wrote of this “buzz-word” writing style, “Newspaper stories often seem like straight jackets, incremental, dulled-down, written in a sort of insider’s code.” It’s no wonder no one knows what the Air Force is doing. We’re unable to tell them in words they understand.

Two essential rules for telling a compelling news story are: write about people and write in plain English. In the Air Force we write about platforms and capabilities using jargon-riddled key themes and messages. “Straight jacketed” by our own devices, we’re spinning our wheels and speaking in circles, and compelling no one to tell our story.

The most essential aspect of telling a story is timeliness. If a story is a day old, it isn’t news. Much like our writing style, our current editorial review ensures 100-percent accuracy…sometimes at the expense of timeliness. However, our enemy has a different approach. According to the Al Qaeda Manual, operatives within their military organization are bound to spread rumors and write statements that instigate people against the enemy…us! So how can we win an information war against an unscrupulous enemy?

SAY HELLO TO WEB 2.0

Right or wrong I learned of the death of a security forces Airman in Iraq long before it appeared on Air Force Link. The story, told in the first person and full of emotion, appeared on several social networks. It was compelling, it pulled at my heart strings, it moved me. I couldn’t help thinking what I would do if I was in the same shoes as the writer. How was it possible for the writer to continue the mission? I could mentally smell the heat of battle. I’ve also read several stories about provisional reconstruction teams and what really happens everyday in a combat zone. All thanks to the Internet and some web-savvy Airmen. The stories are already being told.

The March 28th Roll Call (a tool supervisors at all levels use to keep Airmen informed on current issues) titled “Air Force Priorities, Knowing What Is Important,” outlined the Air Force’s priorities in the global war on terror. It stressed the importance of developing our Airmen by training them for the 21st century, providing the best equipment possible, and ‘resetting’ for the future and beyond. I’d suggest that our Airmen telling their Air Force story are the best possible equipment we have.

Today’s fight is an information fight that we’re not winning. We struggle daily to get the story out to the public in a timely and accurate manner. The Air Force is in this war, but few know it. After reading part two of this story and applying what you’ve learned American citizens will not only know the Air Force is in this war, but that we’re winning the war.

LEVERAGING JOURNALISM…THE NON-KINETIC WEAPON OF CHOICE

If you don’t have a blog, or if you haven’t read a blog, either you’re living somewhere in Montana where there isn’t electricity, or you’re living in the proverbial dark ages. Blogs are changing the way people receive news and they come in many forms. Most of them are text-only, but some specialize in video (vlogs), photographs (photoblogs), or audio (podcasts). These quick, cheap and timely communications tools have morphed from a daily diary to a personal pulpit and now into journalism. News written by the people, for the people…properly named citizen journalism. It’s very transparent. Chances are you already receive your news this way, but don’t even know it. Do you remember the first pictures from the December 24, 2004 tsunami that killed more than 300,000 people throughout the Indian Ocean? Those images were not taken by a professional. That is citizen journalism at its best.

Citizen Journalism is not new! According to Dan Gillmor's We the Media,
“The roots of citizen journalism can be traced to the founding of the United States in the 18th century, when pamphleteers such as Thomas Paine and the anonymous authors of the Federalist Papers gained prominence by printing their own publications. Further advances such as the postal system — and its discount rates for newspapers — along with the telegraph and telephone helped people distribute news more widely.” Public Affairs offices across the globe have unknowingly embraced this concept for years with their Unit Public Affairs Representative (UPAR) program.

“The idea behind citizen journalism is that people without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern technology and the global distribution of the Internet to create or augment media on their own or in collaboration with others, writes Mark Glaser, host of MediaShift, an online guide to the digital media revolution. In an article titled, “Digging Deeper, Your Guide to Citizen Journalism,” Glaser writes, ”Because of the wide dispersion of so many excellent tools for capturing live events — from tiny digital cameras to videophones — the average citizen can now make news and distribute it globally, an act that was once the province of established journalists and media companies.”

That’s power! That’s how we could win the information war. The pen is mightier than the sword. Beat the bad guys at their own game. Equip every Airman with a digital camera, a laptop and wireless Internet…let them tell their story. Not so fast!

THE RIGHT STORY AT THE RIGHT TIME…NETWORKED JOURNALISM

As a young pilot, Lt. Brett Williams ran toward the nearest exit whenever a Public Affairs Officer was in the area. It wasn’t until he was a squadron commander that he realized the importance of public affairs. During a recent promotion ceremony, the now Col. Brett Williams said of public affairs, “They have the ability to tell the right story at the right time.” The quote is very appropriate for current public affairs doctrine, but counter-productive for the business model of citizen journalism.

The truth is, as members of the Armed Forces, we can’t be true citizen journalists. We have to be edited. We’re accountable at every level…the supervisor, the wing commander, the secretary of the Air Force, even the president…all accountable to the taxpayer. We can’t simply give everyone carte-blanch. Some stories don’t need to be told. Stories about horrible supervisors while unfortunate aren’t news. Stories about rape and murder should be left to experts.

This is where Networked Journalism comes in. It’s a hybrid of professional journalism…us…and citizen journalism…you! It’s ‘telling the right story at the right time.’ Jeff Jarvis of Buzzmachine writes, “ Networked journalism takes into account the collaborative nature journalism now: professionals and amateurs working together to get the real story, linking to each other across bands and old boundaries to share facts, questions, answers, ideas, and perspectives.”

YOU CAN DO IT; WE CAN HELP…THE HOME DEPOT METHOD OF JOURNALISM

Grammy award winning artist John Mayer sings in his latest smash hit Waiting For The World to Change, “When you trust the television, what you get is what you got ‘cause when they own the information, they can bend it all they want.” To me, this is a call to action to tell the Air Force story correctly, timely and in a manner everyone will want to hear. You may not have the same convictions as me, but I bet you have a story to tell. Your story is just as powerful as the A-10’s Gatling gun. Your story is just as lethal as the F-22. Your story is a non-kinetic weapon. A weapon that when used correctly will win hearts and minds. A weapon that there are no defenses for. A weapon that will with out a doubt win the information war. Are we winning? You better believe it! The Air Force is in this war and we have the ultimate weapon…YOU.

9-TIPS FOR NETWORKED JOURNALISM

1. Identify A Story
What makes a story ‘newsworthy?’ Well, the name would imply it has to be new, and that is a real good start. Proximity, prominence, timeliness, impact, conflict, controversy, uniqueness, human interest, suspense, the need to follow-up a story and available audio and video are the primary characteristic journalists use to determine newsworthiness. However, for the purpose of ‘networked journalism’ in the Air Force, the important characteristics are: timeliness, uniqueness, human interest and available audio and video. They all kind of go together and truly define what citizen journalism is and why it has been so successful. A story doesn’t have to have all of these, but great stories will!

2. OPSEC
Operational Security should always be on your mind. NO STORY is worth telling if it puts Airmen’s lives at risk. Stories that contain: classified information, tactics, techniques, and procedures, troop movement, exact numbers of troops or equipment, casualty information, privacy act information, or information about an ongoing investigation are explicitly prohibited topics. If it is about information a reporter could get through the Freedom of Information Act, then you’re good to go.

3. Contact PA
We’re in the business of telling the ‘right story at the right time.’ You’re in the business of telling ‘your story…right now.’ It’s possible your story fits right into one of our current themes or messages. Notifying PA up front will keep them in the loop and possibly elevate your story. In a perfect world, all stories would be published on the base’s public site, but in reality some of them won’t. Maybe there could be a page of approved ‘networked’ stories!

4. Go Back To School
Writing isn’t easy. Don’t fool yourself by thinking you’re a good or clever writer. Chances are…you’re not! Go to the library and check out a book on grammar and news writing. If you think you’d get bored reading a book about grammar, you should read Lynne Truss’ book, Eat, Shoots, and Leaves. It’s a humorous take on grammar. Barron’s Pocket Guide To Correct Grammar, is a quick down and dirty look at the essentials. Merv Block is an industry leader in news writing. Check out his book, Writing Broadcast News…Shorter, Sharper, Stronger. This by no means is an all-inclusive list, just a few of my favorites.

5. Find The Heat…People Centric
Dennis Mahoney of A List Apart writes, “Anything makes a good subject, as long as you take your time and crystallize the details, tying them together and actually telling a story, rather than offering a simple list of facts.” People however make great subjects. Spencer Critchley of ourmedia says writing about people engages the imagination and emotions. Find a central character; maybe its you! Tell the story through the central character.

6. Opinions Are Not Facts…Know The Difference
According to Spencer Critchley of ourmedia, “Opinions make personal journalism lively. But be sure you know the difference between opinion and fact, and make it clear to your readers as well. It's all too easy to jump to conclusions when you're predisposed to believe something. This is the source of deluges of unreliable information on the Web.” Critchley adds, “Reputable pro media outlets use professional fact checkers, and they still manage to make mistakes frequently. People may be citing you as a source, so try to get the details right.”

7. Focus…6C’s
Keep your stories to one idea. It’s really easy to jump from one idea to another, but its hard to understand. A good focus is simple and easily identified. Staying focused will also increase how well you communicate. The Defense Information School at Fort Meade lists in their style guide the need to apply the six “Cs:” clear, concise, conversational, complete, current, and correct.

CLEAR:
You must ensure your audience understands your copy the first time they hear it. Your listener cannot go back and read it. Work at writing in a simple, understandable style; write to express an idea, not to impress your audience. Basically limit sentences to one main thought. Don’t make your listener work to understand your copy. Most won’t bother.

CONCISE:
Broadcast copy is short. You must learn to express many thoughts in few words. Thomas Jefferson once said, “The most valuable of all talent is that of never using two words when one will do.” Get to the main point. Use only essential words. Eliminate wordiness. Make your point and move on. It’s kind of frustrating to read wordy, redundant copy, isn’t it?

CONVERSATIONAL:
We basically “converse” using simple, common language. Why not write “for the ear” in the same style? Write a story much the same way you’d tell it to a friend.

COMPLETE:
Your copy must answer the five Ws (who, what, when, where, and why), except, perhaps, “why.” That may be unknown at airtime. But don’t raise new questions or leave old questions unanswered.

CURRENT:
Current copy is timely copy – both in content and the way it sounds. Last week’s events, accidents, and incidents are not today’s news. One way you can make your copy sound much more timely is by using (but not forcing) one of the present verb tenses whenever it’s possible (and correct).

CORRECT:
You must ensure your copy is correct. One mistake could potentially ruin a career. That’s one reason why this is the most important “C.” Simply stated, your copy must be free of factual errors. Double check for correct names, dates, times, etc. And don’t forget that correct copy also means correct use of spelling and grammar. Learn the basic grammar rules, and use a dictionary.

8. Plain English
According to Critchley, “Too many people have been trained to use big words and complicated sentences to build an edifice to hide behind. If a simpler word can be used with no loss of meaning, use it. Same goes for fewer words vs. more. If you can't say it plainly, that may mean you don't understand it well enough yet.” Leave the buzzword talk to us. Stick to words you know.

9. Contact PA
Bottom line, unlike citizen journalism, we’re held accountable. A Public Affairs Officer must review your story for policy and security before it can be posted on your wing’s public website.

After weeks of research on citizen journalism, days of writing, and hours of discussing the powers of citizen journalism I wanted to just relax tonight...But then my 16-year old son shared this clip with me. He found it on one of his friends MySpace page. This is exactly how grassroots journalism, citizen journalism, networked journalism...whatever you want to call it works!

I knew as soon as I saw her awful hair, it could be lights out for Gina. Plus, she talked back to Simon. That is a big AI 'no-no!'

I guess I finally have to start voting. I'm not sure how much taunting I can take from my family as all of my favorites get voted off and theirs are still on. BTW Jordin Sparks is quickly becoming the industry's underdog favorite.

Citizen Journalists Answering Questions About Military Journalists

Last week I contacted Mark Glaser who blogs for PBS. He hosts, 'MediaShift, Your Guide to The Digital Media Revolution.' I asked him this question:

I’m working on a commentary on citizen journalism in the Air Force as a means to leverage the non-kinetic weapon of journalism to win the information war. The problem I’m facing is unlike Yahoo, Reuters, or any other news organization, we can’t simply change our business model. The reason…we’re ultimately held responsible at every level. The base commander, SECDEF,President, the taxpayer etc… I know there is another term being used today called networked journalism, which is probably the term I should be using since, unlike in citizen journalism, before you publish your media, (print, video, still image)a public affairs official will need to clear it. I started off with this as my catalyst: The AF’s #1 weakness is telling a timely story, it’s #1 strength is telling an accurate story. Citizen journalism’s #1 strength is telling a timely story. (My opinion, not the Air Forces) Given these restraints, how do you think the Air Force could best leverage all of these voices to tell one message?

Drivers Training...Day 1

Well it finally happened. I took Nigel out last night for about 30-minutes. Do you remember when I said this boy was tall? Well I wasn't lying. His legs are like mini-Mississippi rivers, only unlike the real river, these mini-rivers seem to never end. I would say he is 75% leg, 25% torso. When he sat in the drivers seat, his knees where past the steering wheel...HIS KNEES folks! Then to add injury to insult, Nigel yields these man-sized feet that seem to not be connected to his central nervous system. They act independently...and rarely do what normal people's feet would do when driving a car. As I looked over at Nigel...the boy who used to drink from a sippie-cup all the time, because it was easier. The boy whose life I saved when there was a frog in his room. The boy who once called me "little bastard." The boy who saved my virgin eyes in Amsterdam by telling me, "whatever you do...don't look left." The boy...who no longer is a boy. The boy who has grown...literely...into a young man.

Anyway, as I looked over at Nigel, I said a little prayer and tried to remember what it was like the first time I got behind the wheel. Of course, par for course, I'd like to think everything I did was perfect and with out hiccup, but I'm sure Kenny would have a different tale to tell. I can't remember if it was the first time I ever drove, but I like to think it was. It was in a 1972 Ford F-250. This truck was a beast. The gears where so far apart, they had zip codes. Power-steering consisted of this 90-pound string bean pulling and pulling and pulling until the truck was heading in the direction I wanted. I remember parallel parking with two trash cans. Kenny said, "if you can drive this truck...you can drive anything." He was right. I pretty much am the master driver. Several times while in third world countries I've had to drive cars and trucks from Russia. It took me a few minutes, but before long we were in motion.

Back to Nigel...I used the same theory Kenny had. I put Nigel in the Rodeo. Two reasons: 1) It is a real tough car to drive. The clutch has a weird friction point on it. 2) THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL HE'LL EVER DRIVE MY SAAB!

You know what? He did really good. It only took him about a minute to get the car moving forward. I was impressed. We were on a real road...no parking lot. We had water on both sides of us and at times the Chesapeake Bay in front of us. We made it to third gear three times. We backed up, made a three point turn, and generally had a good time. He only stalled four times. There were only a dozen or so bumpy starts and quick stops. Remember his feet aren't connected and the Rodeo's brakes are touchy! I'm sure it was pure nerves, but Nigel couldn't resist man-handling the steering wheel and shifter. He held them so tight he had veins popping out of veins on his thin arms. I thought he was going to push the shifter right through the radio when he'd put it into first and third gear. He was nervous, but he really did a GREAT job! LADIES AND GENTLEMAN...we have some natural talent here... There were no cars on the street. I felt relatively confident Nigel could keep the Rodeo in motion and on the street, so I told him to drive us home. We were about 1.5 miles away. All he had to do was keep it in 2nd the whole way, make a right turn on Messick and a right turn into our driveway. He agreed. As we made our way down Poquoson Ave, some little terrorists popped up and flanked both sides of the road. Then like a bad episode of the Twilight Zone, five cars merged at the intersection of Poquoson and Messick. I tried to verbally tell Nigel what to do: "Indicate you're turning right, clutch in, downshift to second, turn." Simple enough! NOPE! Nigel somehow heard, "Freeze up, indicate you're turning right, stop in the middle of the intersection, clutch in, stay in third, gas and clutch until you're moving again, clutch out, go!" WE MADE IT! We got a bit close to the ditch on the right side of the road, but we didn't hit anything or anyone and no one honked their horn. Not bad! I think the first time I came to an intersection I was there for three or four light cycles. OOPS! OK, our final task was to turn right into our driveway. It is kind of on a bend and is flanked on both sides by deep ditches. To make matters worse, the cars we blocked when we turned onto Messick, were right on our ass. Once again I tried to verbally tell Nigel what to do: "Because there are cars behind you, you want to indicate you're turning right way in advance. Clutch in, downshift to second gear, brake, turn." Nigel however heard: "Indicate, turn, brake!"

We made it...He was happy, I was extremely proud, we were both alive.

Getting Ready

It's getting close to go-time. I've finished up my Advanced Combat Skills Training, and all I need to do now is go to a mandatory Family Support briefing on Monday. I still don't know when I'm taking off, because I'm leaving in a package of one...The folks who send me out the door haven't returned my calls or e-mails. So I wait!

I have a few loose ends at home to take care of. I need to put Maddy's bike together...well really, it's just the hand breaks. I've always had a tough time with hand breaks. I'm not much of a "put together guy." Especially when the parts are small. I'm going to pack away the majority of my cloths before I leave so my lovely wife can have one of her dreams come true...a big closet all to herself. I have just as much clothes as she does. When you add my uniforms and the fact my stuff is just bigger than hers, there is simply no room for both of us. We've added "large closets" to our list of must haves when we move to Italy at the end of the year. Nigel is ready for behind the wheel drivers training. Two problems: 1) He's like 7'15". I swear his HUGE! He's as tall as a 6'5" pine tree...and I refuse to take the front seat out of the Saab, or to let the car smell like pine. 2) Shelly isn't too motivated to take him out, and she doesn't think I should. So he waits. Believe it or not, Ollie is the best of the bunch. He's grown so much, both physically and mentally, over the past year.

AHHH YEAH! We finally stepped up and bought a laptop. I'm on it right now. This is sooo cool. I'm watching MSNBC, talking to my friend Chris in Iraq, and writ ting about my looming trip. The notebook computer is just one of many things I've bought to prepare for the trip. I've also bought some coolmax-wicking underwear, sunblock, cologne, shaving cream, meds, hair care products, travel alarm clock, and ear plugs. Turns out, the one thing Chris didn't bring that he wished he did was a a bath rug. Also, the twin size sheets they issue to you are ratty and suck. So here is a PLEA FOR HELP! If you have a bath rug and twin sheets you're thinking about replacing...go ahead and do so. However, instead of throwing the old ones away, feel free to send them here:

AMERICAN IDOL UPDATE

I missed all of the shows while I was in New Jersey. It prepared me for my trip to Iraq. I will be watching the show a day late and won't be able to vote. That is ok, because between Shelly and Nigel I'm sure the right person will win. Last week's show was awesome! Shelly HATES GINA, and The Pretenders, and Gina sang a Chrissie Hynde song...and it rocked!

Combat Ready...or Wow! I'm Getting Old.

My good friends and enemies, I now know the first six lines of hand-to-hand combat the Marines use to teach their recruits. So now instead of just falling to the ground when approached by the bad guy, I know just enough to really piss him off.

One of the instructors asked the group to raise their hands if we thought we couldn't "pull the trigger, or use the hand-to-hand combat skills to kill someone." I swiftly raised my hand. I was one of maybe five in a group of 80. Not afraid of what others thought, I quickly took to the stage and explained. I've shot expert with M-16 and have just missed expert with the M-9 twice. During hand-to-hand (lines training) I quickly mastered the commands and was throwing everyone down to the ground. However, I'm a broadcaster! I've killed many bits, several punch-lines, but never another human. No one in the group has. I'd like to think that when push comes to shove, my sense of duty, self preservation, and lets face it...awesome hair would prevail. Its been leaked I will be receiving a lifetime achievement award for my hair when I return from Iraq. I think I'd be stupid and arrogant to assume I have it in me. My friend Bryan...he could kill people, already has. He has told me the emotional strain and heart pain associated with "pulling the trigger." He has also told me about the remains of the dead. None of which are too appealing to a peaceful loving guy who finds joy in how peoples eyes sparkle, or the enjoyment he gets from telling stories to others.

This training was tough. I thrashed my body all around while perfomring tasks like convoy commander and combat medic. For those of you on your way to CST, or simply deploying, I urge you...get in shape. I've lost 27 pounds since Jan 1, and shed a minute off my 1.5 mile time...and I'm beat after 14-days of training. BE PREPARED!

With that said, I know I'm not going down before I accomplish several things...like meeting one of the greatest artists of our times:

Seriously, there should be no doubt...I'm a trained warrior...ready, willing and able.

Yesterday we ran through tactics. Basically we learned how to be an asset in a fire team in the event we take fire from insurgents. It was a long tough day. I chose to wear my full body armor, which weighs in at around 40 pounds. I'm very sore and tired. I'm not sure how some of the other folks are making it. I've lost 27 pounds since the first of the year and shaved a full minute off my 1.5 mile run time. I look around me and we have some really old National Guardsmen, and Reserves here, plus some rather hefty out of shape folks.

Tonight my squad heads out for night operations. New Jersey is in a winter weather watch. They are calling for flash floods tonight and 1-3 inches of snow in the morning. THIS WILL BE THE BEST TRAINING FOR IRAQ EVER! Snow and Rain!

Later this week we learn Urban warfare...with paint guns. I've already informed everyone that my feelings will be hurt, and I'd probably start crying if someone hit me with their paint gun. I also told them I would drop my gun and engage in hand to hand combat if they hit me...!

Action Will Always Beat Reaction...Combat Skills Training Day 1

I'm at Combat Skills Training in New Jersey. Stuck...12-fellas to a room. The guy below me sticks something wicked. Other than that...I'm ok, well kind of.

I ran out of my ADD meds right before I came here and was unable to get a new prescription. That isn't a bad thing. The bad thing is...combine me without meds and instructors who are down right horrible...then Chris' mind is free to roam. And roam it did during DOT 1 (Day of Training)

Instead of listening to what the instructors where trying to teach, I was listening to what they were saying. It wasn't good, but very funny. Here are some one liners that had me going:
-Things of that nature...
-...and what not!
-You want it loose, but not sloppy loose.
-You want to take that in the rear.
-I'm too big to hid behind a sapling, I need a big bush to hide in!

This continued through DOT 2. PLUS...NO AMERICAN IDOL for the next two weeks!

There was some good that came from the first day of training. I ran into two people from my past that really have helped set the tone for my future. The first is a guy named Brian Purtell. I knew him as SSgt Purtell, now he's Capt Purtell. Brian was the very first TV news story I covered. He won an award for a picture he shot. Later, I bumped into Sgt First Class Ken Hudson. Ken is an Army Public Affairs troop that was with me in Baghdad in '03. He was there the day insurgents rocketed our hotel. He is training for another deployment just like me.

Combat Skills Training...

I'm on my way to Combat Skills Training. This is a two week course were I...Chris Eder...Broadcaster Numero Uno...will learn how to yield my M-16 with great vengeance and furious anger on those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. You will now it was me, a broadcast journalist, who was there, when I lay my vengeance upon you.

OK! Maybe it won't be like that, but I will learn how to clear out buildings and how to take up offensive and defensive positions. This time instead of blasting Celine Dion music from my iPod and yielding my three-barreled tripod, I will actually have some lethal skills.

I know, some of you would argue Celine is just as powerful as a M-16. Others would argue, no one would want to take me as a POW, because after 10-15 minutes of me talking, any sane and even insane person would let me go. To that I say THANKS! You're right. And that is my plan if ever I am captured. I will revert to my days when my aunts used to pay me top dollar to be quite for 15-minutes. It worked then and it will work now. Only now, I'm equipped with knowledge...and knowledge is power. Plus, I still plan on bringing my iPod with a playlist called Karaoke. In dire situations, I plan to engage the enemy in song. No one can beat me or tolerate me when I'm singing Sweet Caroline, or Tiny Dancer. Consider yourself warned.

I'm looking forward to my training and believe that the training, prior experience and a dedication to family, America, and life, I will be prepared.

Well...did America get it right? Almost. I only really upset about one person who made it in the Top 12.

The bad thing about Haley and Sanjaya still being in is...there are two more really good singers who will go home before their time...maybe even four more! YOU GOT TO VOTE! In fact, you have to vote even more, because I will be away from the show for two weeks.

Weeding down to the Top 6 would be easy as pie if it weren't for votefortheworst.com They have Sanjaya as their pick all the way! AHHH! So while I know my Top 6-7 is what really should be, it may not if votefortheworst can keep the votes going their way.
Here is my Top 6-7, ranked in order of their performances. The Top 4 are so close. It really depends on what voter group rallies behind their singer the most.

Citizen Journalism, or The Decline of Standards, or 15 Minutes of Fame, Instead of Actual Money

At work we have been talking about ways to streamline our processes in an effort to add immediacy to our products. What good is news, if the content is a week old? A day old? Now...my boss and I have had some rather good debate on the issue. (Suck up time!) I like him! He's able to hear my opinion for what it is, and not attack the the person (usually me) delivering it when he disagrees. I also like the fact that this dude is SMART! I can't blow smoke in any direction without him calling my bluff. SO...I've done my research to support my point of view...(Back to topic)

My boss suggested we don't need to worry about quality so much because our society has accepted a lack in quality in favor of immediate reports. He's right! In "The Customer Is Always Right," Harlan Neugeboren says:
During the past year, we have seen many changes in the way that viewers use and consume news. Viewers know that they can search Google Video, YouTube and MySpace and find news content that they want. The key words are "what they want." Many viewers will search and find any type of news content--it does not necessarily have to be from traditional sources. Viewers are also willing to trade content for quality and don't know or care that it was shot on a Sony XDCAM or Panasonic P2, for example.
There are two problems with this...especially for military journalists.
1) According to Neugeboren, To compete with these other sources, broadcasters need to be in the content business and to provide viewers with as rich an experience as possible. We're not in the content business, some would argue, we're not in the news business. We're in the business of changing hearts and minds, by telling the Air Force story. (Side note...we're not doing this so well, and I feel we're trying to grasp at straws and implement change for the sake of change...and for some civilians to keep their kooshie jobs.)
2) When I write a story, it goes through a very lengthy qc process...hence the reason for the topic to begin with...how to streamline. Bottom line, like it or not, when my product does hit the web, TV, or radio...it better be accurate. Not the case in Citizen Journalism...There is no QC process. Sometimes this is great. Like when the first photos of the tsunamis emerged and a global outcry for help was answered. However, sometimes this happens:

Hajj is a free-lance photojournalist. He has submitted some great photos...Not anymore! You see unlike me, Hajj has no QC process. He, like any citizen journalist simply submits, and we the people...ACCEPT! The above picture was "photoshoped!" It is not an accurate representation of what really was happening in Beirut. Japanese around the world were outraged that Hajj could be so insensitive!

Citizen Journalism is not new! According to Dan Gillmor's "We the Media,"(another kiss-up opportunity for my boss who is a huge history buff)
The roots of citizen journalism can be traced to the founding of the United States in the 18th century, when pamphleteers such as Thomas Paine and the anonymous authors of the Federalist Papers gained prominence by printing their own publications. Further advances such as the postal system — and its discount rates for newspapers — along with the telegraph and telephone helped people distribute news more widely.
What is new...is the internet! Well relatively new...According to Frank Beacham's article "Corporations Co-opt Citizen Journalism,"
Advertising forecasters predict double-digit growth for online media outlets in the new year. Traditional media, including television and newspapers, are slated for flat growth, at best, during 2007.
THAT GOTS ME SCARED! Who will I turn to for help? How can I keep my job? Contacts?

Probably not! Tracy Johnson in "Morning Radio," claims that anyone can be a radio DJ, (or broadcaster for the context of this post) but to be really good, you have to always strive to be the best...that is what will seperate you from everyone else.
This will also be true in Citizen Journalism v. Professional Journalism. Dan Gillmor recently predicted in an online blog that:
...professional photographers and videographers will soon see their ranks dwindle as the "the ability to make a living at it will crumble soon." He said. "They can't possibly compete in the mediasphere of the future. We're entering a world of ubiquitous media creation and access. When the tools of creation and access are so profoundly democratized, and when updated business models connect the best creators with potential customers, many if not most of the pros will fight a losing battle to save their careers." The good news is according to Gilmore...
there will always be in demand by a group of discriminating consumers who will pay for their services.

Is Hip-Hop Dead?

Sales of rap music are declining as more are critical of its message
"...after 30 years of growing popularity, rap music is now struggling with an alarming sales decline and growing criticism from within about the culture's negative effect on society."

Why? Well initially, I would say sales of all albums are down, largely due to popular music download sites like iTunes, or even Peer to Peer (P2P) sites. Then I would say, American Idol has produced some real good artists over the past five years. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood both are major award winners at all levels. Plus Kelly is hot!!!

Hip-hop superstar NAS even tried to rebuke the fact Hip-Hop was dying releasing an album titled "Hip Hop Is Dead." Sales are bleak. Sales are down across the board, but Hip-Hop has taken the biggest hit...21% between 2005-06.
Is Hip-Hop on the down because of it's negative message, soft-core music videos, over-indulgent lifestyle, or the latest fashion....the grillz? I say none...I say the true reason for the decline is blamed on VH-1

This show led my MC Serch from the 80's Hip-Hop group...3rd Bass, brought 12 white would-be rappers to the Bronx, home of Hip-Hop. I smell Emmy! Wait, no, that's not what Emmy smells like, that is trash I smell. The White Rapper Show doesn't get full credit for killing Hip-Hop. This guy started the Trimspa drip back in the 90's.

I don't think Hip-Hop is dead, dying maybe, but not dead. iTunes now makes it possible to buy only the songs you want, instead of the entire album...this makes great sense. We recently did just that yesterday. Norah Jones is back and better than ever...at least she's better than DAUGHTRY in record sales.
"Not Too Late" by Norah Jones remained atop the Billboard 200 for the third, non-consecutive week.
Jones' release becomes the first album to claim the No. 1 spot for three weeks since the "Now 22" compilation last summer. Read the rest...

So while Hip-Hop sales are down, ratings for American Idol are up...way up, and iTunes and P2P sites are moving media at a clip similar to Britney's rehab visits.

Once again, just like the fellas...half of them were really good, and the other half are WAY out of their league. I really think it will be very easy for America to vote off singers all the way down to around Top 8-ish. Side note: I only have a few more of these posts to make, because when I get to Iraq, AFN airs the show a day late...

So the show...It seems the girls who are really good, are humble...and the girls who are not so good, but really hot...are on ego-trips. There were a ton of price-less expressions after Simon told girl after girl, "That was not good!" You know...I love to have a few drinks and go to a karaoke bar and sing like I know what I'm doing...the problem is...I'm not a very good singer, rather, I have a good time and hope I'm entertaining, and hope those watching had a good time. Not the case for three of the girls last night. Haley, Aliana, and Antonella ALL SUCKED and had sour puss faces after the judges told them so.

My girl LaKisha was hot, but not as much as last week. She took her midnight train to Georgia. Melinda came out and sang My Funny Valentine...a song Const sang a few seasons back...However, Melinda's version once again...top 10 material of all performances. Not much of a change from last week's Top 4, or Bottom 2. OBTW...Jodin Sparks sang Reflections, by Chris V's girlfriend....

Geek In The Pink...Or AI 6 The Dudes Show Up!

I could stop with just the title and be satisfied, but I like pictures and words, so here you go.

Last night the guys...well almost all of them...came to sing. Phil Stacy started off with a John Waite song that had the wife ready to go immediately to iTunes. I wasn't so excited. I really wanted to see my favorites and watch Sanjaya, which my friend Chris V. says is Indian for, "Way out of his league," who look liked Michael Jackson. There was only one REALLY bad performance last night. Picking the second dude to go home is a tough on, so I chose someone who I think was a bit corny last night.

Top four just about the same from last week, with the addition of Sundance Head. He closed the show out with a rather good performance of Mustang Sally. I have three favorites outright. I'm cool right now, because they are not going anywhere...but when they mix with the ladies...we may have some trouble. I'm going to go out on a limb and say they will make Top 6. I will call them BCC for Blake, Chris & Chris. All three of them had killer performances, however, Chris Sligh was the weakest of the three, but his wife was there...Seems the two of us have more than a name in common. We both ended up with wives way out of our leagues.

So here are my Top 4 from last night. Mind you I really like Jamiroquai...and I want to to iTunes to get "Geek In The Pink," which reminds of a story my friend Julie told me in San Antonio...

April Is Autism Awareness Month

Living with someone who has autism will change your life! It will change you! Sadly, some are not equipped to handle the emotional and physical challenges. Not the case for my family. Each of us has risen to the occasion. I'm amazed every day how far Ollie has come...and how far as a family we've come...and just when you think things couldn't get any better...they do!

A massive international effort led by Canadian scientists has homed in on the genes behind autism - a breakthrough that could revolutionize how the mysterious and surprisingly common condition is both detected and treated. Touting it as the most significant advance in the field in 30 years, researchers say the landmark project has put within reach a DNA test to identify children with autism early enough to counter the condition's worst effects.

What does this mean? Not too much for Ollie, but it opens the doors for my other two kids. I'll explain in a bit. The wife and I have long thought that DNA played a role in Ollie's condition. I have ADD, which is also a spectrum disorder with similar cross-over signs and symptoms. One that really stands out is the communication element. Ollie has a difficult time communicating with others. While most you know I'm never short of words, I too have a difficult time communicating with people. However, I'm on the other end of the spectrum. Ollie struggles to come up with words. I struggle with saying the right words. I have what I loving call an "un-empathetic mouth!" Even if I know what I'm about to say may make things worse, I will say it anyway...because it is the right thing to say. I will talk to people and then look with amazement when they have a baffled look on their face as if I was speaking in tongues. Both of us have a tough time reading people and saying appropriate things. I can't remember how many times I've blasted out important information to my wife like we were in a locker room, instead of having an important talk about something serious. How many more times will I stick my foot in my mouth? How long before I learn its not ok to tell a lady who is obviously ill, that she looks "BAD!"

OK! Back to why this new research is a good thing for my other two kids...Well now that they have located the DNA that triggers autism, they can get tested to see if they have the variant. Valuable information to have when it comes time to having babies...AND THAT TIME IS A LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG way away for my little girl. Knowing that you have the variant that will predispose your child to autism will prepare you for what comes next, and enable early intervention services to take place. Early intervention services have played a huge role in Ollie's success.

WHAT YOU SHOULD TAKE AWAY FROM THIS:
1. Ollie isn't disabled...he is enabled
2. Autism is a spectrum disorder...chances are there is a child in your kids class who has it.
3. April is Autism Awareness month...if you suspect your child, or a Friends child is showing signs and symptoms of developmental delay YOU HAVE A RIGHT AS A HUMAN AND FRIEND TO SUGGEST THE NEED FOR EARLY INTERVENTION SCREENING AND SERVICES!

The song spun plenty of men and women into a frenzy. Wanting to have that number, giving that number as their own to some would-be partner, and my favorite...on the bathroom wall...

Well those days are over...Say hello to 2007. For people with ADD, there are plenty of options to keep you communicating and still have time to...oh look, something shiny!

That used to be me too! But, the world around us is changing...and changing fast! I really felt stuck in the middle of all of it. Hell, my dad changes operating systems, upgrades, and tweaks performance output values on his computer as often as I wash my clothes. My oldest son is an Administrator on several Tech Forums. Even my youngest son can change wallpapers and is a whizz on the computer. Like my cousin, I mostly checked e-mail, and surfed the web for useless info, like cocktail recipes, men's issues, and happy news! Not anymore.

Really, how are people communicating these days? Do girls still have "sucker boards" in their apartments? This is a cork board with the telephone numbers of all the guys who hit on them and bought them drinks all night...and got nothing in return, but a place on the board! Do people really call anymore?

Everybody is doing it...My mom has a blog! There's no content, no cool widgets, put...15 people have visited it. I know because that's how we assign value in today's communication. Really, does anyone use a phone anymore? OK! Maybe in cases of emergency, or by obligation

WOW! The show started off with someone who really wanted to win this competition, rather than not get kicked off. In general, the girls have more talent than the dudes this year, but it still is ALMOST any one's game. Of the guys and girls that really can sing...about four-fellows and five-foxxys...the competition is pretty even. Well...almost even. Simon said after the last performance of the night...which just might be my second favorite ever...right behind Kelly Clarkson's, "Natural Women," "...I'm almost tempted to tell the remaining 23 here tonight to pack your bags and buy a plane ticket.

My girl..LaKisha Jones was out of control last night...NO ONE WAS EVEN CLOSE. Put her in a competition with ALL of the former Idol winners and I think she'd come in a close second to this girl...

In third place in my dream world...would be Dreamgirls stand out...Jennifer Hudson

So...I'm short on time...I have a huge test this morning...fingers crossed...here is my run-down from last night's show. Mind you there is a huge gap between first and second with the ladyhumps.

American Idol 6 - Top 12 Men

Well...what a disappointment last night's show was. It almost made me want to watch AFN Idol instead! From these Top 12, we, as citizens of the greatest nation in the world, have to vote out six. This will be very tough, because I only like five of them. Last night's show (get the full run-down) only had a few shinning stars...luckily they were all of my favorites. In order of how they performed:

ADD and John Mayer

I tend to move so fast, I fail to pick up on the subtleties in life. This is particularly true when it comes to movie stars and music lyrics. I'll make up names and words and speak them with the so much confidence, even pop-culture robots will believe me! I tend to just play it off when I get busted for my errors...HEY, someone has to be the smart one and someone has to be the handsome one! I'm still trying to figure out which one I am.

John Mayer just won two Grammys for pop album of the year, and best pop male artist. By now, you're probably are asking yourself what John Mayer and my ADD have in common. Well it happens to be the lyrics in is Grammy wining song, "Waiting On The World To Change." I bought his CD "Continuum" two months ago and have played it, and played it, and played it...But I, like usual, just kind made up the lyrics with restless abandon. It wasn't until last week when my wife said, "don't you just love that one lyric in the song?" Par for course I said YEAH! She then said, "you don't know what I'm talking about...do you?" BUSTED! She always busts me. She's good...real good. And she is like 100-times smarter than me.

The lyric in question has really allowed me to not only focus on all the words in the song, (which will be another post) but on what ADD really does to me. Here is the lyric:

"When you trust your television, what you get is what you got. 'Cause when they own the information, they can bend it all they want."

WOW! That is really profound. There are at least a dozen more similar "mantra-like" lyrics in this song. But I had missed them for two-months, and probably would of missed them for ever, if it weren't for my wife. What else have I missed? What else do I think I know, but am too busy to slow down for just a second or two? A BIG THANK YOU TO MY WIFE...and JOHN MAYER.

My Six-Month Vacation

This may be a re-hash for many of you, but I wanted to bring everyone up to speed:

This is my second trip to Iraq. I’m a Combat Correspondent (radio/TV broadcast journalist) in the US Air Force. I leave for Iraq sometime in April. I will be reporting the military news from all over the country. This will entail me making several trips via convoy, air, or combo of both. I fell very prepared. I may also be running the radio station...Freedom Radio 107.7 . I will be there for a little over six months. I wanted to get everyone’s e-mail address so I can communicate on a daily, or near daily basis, so folks will now what really happens while deployed in Iraq. I’ve been in now for almost 17 years. Not sure if I’m going to cut loose when I hit 20 years.

I want to put together an e-mail group of my extended family so I can keep in touch with everyone and not just while I’m in Iraq! We have a wonderful extended family that has seem to have lost touch, maybe even forgot, how much we mean to each other and how much fun we had together. For the record, my goal is not to SPAM you with jokes, rather, a quick and sincere… “how ya doing” and updates from Iraq.

This is the place I will post all of my thoughts! I will use this blog to update friends and family on my vacation to Iraq, post my views on the world we live in, my struggles with ADD, my daily triumphs and set backs in life, and just about anything else I can think of. The content will sometimes be controversial...that is on purpose. I'm a very passionate person. The content will sometimes be ridiculous...that too is on purpose. I'm a very ridiculous man. The content will sometimes be about stuff only I care about...sorry! Feel free to comment and share with me your ideals.

Soon I will be able to add pictures, links, and all that cool stuff. For now, my good friend Chris V. is adding cool stuff. I highly recommend you link to Jacksnupple and The Dooce for some good reading. I will transfer over some of my favorite blogs from another site I hang out. Also, I have a real good blog in my head about ADD and me.
